Oglogchiin Wall

Located at the base of Daichin Mountain in Batshireet Soum, Khentii Province, Oglogchiin Wall is a unique and outstanding monument of Mongolia’s medieval history and architecture. This ancient fortress is especially remarkable for its construction technique built entirely by carefully fitting stones together without the use of mortar, clay, or sand. Its precise dry-stone masonry has earned admiration as a rare example of engineering skill in the world.

The site is located approximately 45 km southwest of Batshireet Soum center, near the confluence of the Bayangol and Oglogch Rivers, within a forested valley of pine and larch trees at the foothills of Daichin Mountain. The fortress stretches along the mountainside, blending naturally with the surrounding terrain.
Oglogchiin Wall was constructed entirely from stone, with walls built along the slope of the mountain. The walls are approximately 2.5–3 meters high and 2.5 meters thick, extending for about 3 kilometers. Evidence suggests that there were once two main gates on the southern side. Inside the fortress, traces of small earthen embankments can still be seen, although in many areas they are difficult to distinguish from the natural landscape. There are no clear remains of permanent buildings inside the enclosure. However, some raised earthen platforms along the inner walls are believed to have been used by archers during the 12th–14th centuries as defensive positions.

Walking the Site
Since the wall is quite long, comfortable walking shoes are recommended if you plan to explore the full structure. Some sections may be uneven or partially collapsed, so caution is needed when walking on or near the wall.
Getting There
The site can be reached by dirt road heading south from Batshireet Soum. As it is located in a forested taiga region, the road may become difficult to navigate during rainy weather, so travel conditions should be checked in advance.

After visiting Oglogchiin Wall, you can continue your journey to nearby historical sites such as Rashaan Khad (the Rock with Ancient Inscriptions) and Binder Ovoo, creating a rich cultural and archaeological travel route through the Khentii region.
