The Illuminated Monument of Genghis Khan

Located in Dadal, Khentii Province, overlooking the beautiful valley of the Onon River, the Illuminated Monument of Genghis Khan is a significant cultural landmark built to commemorate the birthplace, legacy, and extraordinary achievements of Genghis Khan, the founder of the Great Mongol Empire.

The monument was erected in 1962 near the Gurvan Nuur Recreation Area to mark the 800th anniversary of Genghis Khan's birth. Designed by the renowned sculptor L. Makhval, the monument stands 12 meters high, with a 10-meter-wide base and a 4-meter thickness. At its summit is a stylized eternal flame, symbolizing prosperity, strength, and the enduring spirit of the Mongolian people. Since ancient times, fire has represented growth, vitality, and good fortune in Mongolian culture, making it a fitting centerpiece for the monument.
The front of the monument features a standing portrait of Genghis Khan, portrayed with the dignity and authority of a great statesman. In the upper right corner is the White State Banner, one of Mongolia's most important national symbols. Beside the portrait is an inscription in traditional Mongolian script that reads:
"Though my body may grow weary, let it be so. May my Great State never falter."
The reverse side of the monument bears the inscription:
"Dedicated to the 800th Anniversary of the Birth of Genghis Khan, the Founder of the Mongolian State."
Travel Tips
Photography
The most spectacular photographs can be taken at sunrise or sunset, when the monument casts its shadow across the valley of the Onon River. The monument is also beautifully illuminated after dark, making nighttime photography an excellent way to capture the true meaning behind its name, the "Illuminated Monument."
Suggested Route
A rewarding itinerary is to travel through Batshireet and Binder in Khentii Province, follow the scenic Onon River downstream, pass through Bayan-Adarga, and conclude your journey at the Illuminated Monument of Genghis Khan.
What to Bring
The Onon River valley has a large number of mosquitoes during the summer months. Visitors are advised to bring insect repellent for a more comfortable experience. If you plan to relax along the riverbank, please remember to keep the area clean and avoid leaving any litter to help preserve the natural environment.

Уг хөшөөний загварыг уран барималч Л.Махвал зохиож 12 метр өндөр, 10 метр суурийн өргөнтэй, 4 метр зузаантайгаар хийж оройн хэсэгт Монголчуудын эртнээс нааш бадран мандахын билэг тэмдэг гэж үзэж ирсэн галыг бадамлан асаж буй хэлбэрээр дүрсэлсэн.
Хөшөөний урд талд Чингис хааны босоо хөргийг төрийн зүтгэлтэн хүний эрхэмсэг төрхтэйгөөр сийлж, баруун дээд хэсэгт төрийн цагаан сүлдийг дүрслэн, Чингис хааны зүүн талд нь “Алд бие мину алжааваас алжаатугай. Аху төр мину бүү алдартугай” хэмээн хуучин монгол бичгээр бичсэн байдаг. Хөшөөний ар талд “Монголын тулгар төрийг байгуулсан Чингис хааны мэндэлсний 800 жилийн ойд зориулав” гэсэн бичээс байдаг.
