Ikh Burkhant Complex

The Ikh Burkhant Complex is located in Khalkhgol Soum of Dornod Province, on the eastern bank of the Khalkh River. It is considered the largest horizontally constructed statue of Maitreya (Megjid Janraisig) Buddha in Mongolia. This monument is recognized as a remarkable cultural, religious, and architectural heritage dating back to the 19th century.

The complex is situated approximately 35 kilometers north of Sumber, the center of Khalkhgol Soum, on a bend of the western bank of the Khalkh River. It stands as one of Mongolia’s significant historical and cultural landmarks.
According to historical sources, the complex was commissioned and directed by Togtokhtör, also known as “To Van,” a nobleman of the Khalkha Setsen Khan aimag holding the title of Prince Ilden. The construction took place between 1859 and 1864. It is said that the monument was built through the collective efforts, craftsmanship, and dedication of nomadic people, artisans, and skilled builders of the time, overcoming significant challenges.

Because the Buddha statue is extremely large, it is best captured from a distance or using a drone. During sunset, the stone carvings become especially vivid and visually striking under warm light.
Road Conditions:
The route from Choibalsan city to Khalkhgol Soum is rough and challenging. A 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended. The site is located about 35 km north of the soum center.
Nearby Attractions:
Visitors are encouraged to also explore the Khalkh River Victory Memorial Complex and the scenic Buir Lake, both of which are located within the region.
Respectful Conduct:
As this is a sacred religious site, visitors should behave respectfully—do not walk over the Buddha image or touch the stone carvings.
