Achit Lake

Achit Lake is fed by several rivers and streams, including Tsagaan Nuur River, Khatuugiin Gol, Bukh Mörön, and Uliastai River, which originate from the snowfields and glaciers of the Tsengelkhairkhan and Turgen mountain ranges, major branches of the Mongolian Altai Mountains. The lake releases its excess water through a single outlet known as Usan Khooloi River, which flows into the Khovd River.
The lake covers an area of 311 square kilometers and lies at an elevation of 1,464 meters above sea level. It stretches approximately 30 kilometers in length and 16 kilometers in width. Achit Lake receives water from a drainage basin of about 10,500 square kilometers. The average depth of the lake is around 5 meters.
Several terraces can be found at some distance from the shoreline. These terraces bear clear evidence of past water recession, indicating that Achit Lake once covered a much larger area than it does today.
TRAVEL TIPS FOR VISITORS
Mosquito and Insect Protection:
The lakeshore can be heavily populated with mosquitoes and biting insects, especially during the summer months. Visitors are advised to bring insect repellent spray or lotion.
Bird Watching:
Achit Lake is an important gathering site for migratory and rare bird species. It is an excellent destination for birdwatchers, so bringing binoculars and a camera is highly recommended.
Road Conditions:
The areas surrounding the lake include marshy and sandy terrain. Traveling with a four-wheel-drive (4×4) vehicle is recommended for a safer and more comfortable journey.
